“Wild Encounters: Koalas and wildlife that add to the Moogie magic”

Tucked into the heart of the Scenic Rim, the Moogie House Collective is more than just a place to stay—it’s a sanctuary for both people and wildlife. Set across 19 acres of koala-protected habitat, our property is home to an abundance of native species, including one of Australia’s most iconic and beloved animals—the koala.

Meet Our Furry Neighbours

If you’re lucky, you might just spot one of our resident koalas snoozing high in the gum trees near Moogie House, Glamp, or Pod. While they may look cuddly, koalas are actually quite solitary and spend up to 18–20 hours a day sleeping—thanks to their low-energy eucalyptus diet. The best times to spot them are early morning or late afternoon, especially along the old camp road track behind Moogie House.

At Moogie Pod, you may be lucky to see the brownish coated female koala in the trees to the left of the Pod. At Moogie House, the smaller young male koala (with wonderfully large tuffed ears) often is high in the trees seen from the track. Our guests at Moogie Glamp often hear our very healthy larger male named Harley around the tent, before they see him, although the trees around the Glamp are his favourite place to hang out.

Fun Koala Facts

  • Not a bear! Despite often being called “koala bears,” they’re actually marsupials—more closely related to wombats.
  • Highly picky eaters: Koalas feed almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves, but out of over 600 species of eucalyptus, they only eat about 30!
  • Built-in cushions: Koalas have a cartilage pad at the end of their spine, making tree-branch lounging incredibly comfy.
  • Unique fingerprints: Just like humans, koalas have fingerprints—so detailed, they can even confuse forensic experts!

Beyond the Koalas

Koalas might steal the show, but they’re not the only wildlife you’ll encounter at Moogie. Keep your eyes peeled for kangaroos at dusk, echidnas shuffling through the undergrowth, vibrant king parrots flitting between trees, the wedge tailed eagles soaring high above, and the occasional chorus of frogs after rain. It’s a nature lover’s paradise, perfect for slow stays, peaceful walks, and spontaneous wildlife sightings.

Where Nature and Comfort Meet

Whether you’re sipping your morning coffee on the deck at Moogie Pod, soaking in the cedar hot tub at Moogie Glamp, or enjoying a barbecue at Moogie House, there’s always a chance nature will join you for a visit—often just a few metres away.

At Moogie, we believe in harmonising with the land and its native inhabitants. Our commitment to sustainability means we do everything we can to protect and preserve this precious environment for generations of guests—and koalas—to come.
